How to Write Product Listings That Actually Sell on Amazon India

Title keywords, bullet points, backend search terms — the listing decisions that determine whether your product gets found and whether buyers convert.

By Bzyness Team

On Amazon, your listing is both your storefront and your SEO document. A well-written listing gets found by the right buyers, communicates value faster than competitors, and converts at a higher rate — reducing your need to spend on advertising to make up for weak organic performance.

The mechanics of Amazon's A10 algorithm are not fully public, but the levers that sellers consistently see impact ranking and conversion are well understood. Here is how to use them.

The Product Title: Where Most Sellers Leave Money Behind

Amazon gives you up to 200 characters for the title on most categories. Most sellers use 60–80. The remaining characters are lost keyword opportunities. Amazon's algorithm weights title keywords heavily — a keyword that appears in the title will rank for that term far more strongly than the same keyword in bullets or backend search terms.

A high-performing title follows the pattern: Brand + Product Name + Key Feature + Material/Size/Colour/Quantity + Secondary Feature. For a cotton men's shirt: "BRAND Cotton Men's Formal Shirt — Slim Fit, Full Sleeve, Wrinkle Resistant — Sizes S to 3XL — Blue." Every word is either a search term buyers use or a conversion-relevant spec. No filler words. No brand taglines.

Five Bullet Points: Convert, Do Not Just List

The five bullet points are your primary conversion real estate. Most buyers decide within the bullets whether to add to cart or go back to search results. The most common mistake is using bullets to list product features rather than to sell benefits.

Structure each bullet starting with a capitalized keyword phrase that is itself a search term, then explain the benefit: "WRINKLE-FREE COTTON: Made from a 60/40 cotton-poly blend that stays pressed through a full workday — no ironing needed mid-week." The buyer searching "wrinkle free formal shirt" sees their keyword instantly and reads why it matters. That is a conversion moment.

Images: The Real Deciding Factor

Most Indian sellers underinvest in images. A white background main image is mandatory and determines whether buyers click on your listing at all. But the six supporting images are where you actually sell the product. Use them to show the product from every angle, show scale (a lifestyle shot with a human hand or a reference object), show packaging (builds trust and reduces post-delivery disappointment), and address the top two objections buyers have about your category.

In apparel, show a size chart as an image. In electronics, show the package contents. In kitchenware, show the product in use. Image 3 or 4 should be an infographic highlighting the top three features with icons — this is what buyers see when they swipe through on mobile, which is where over 60% of Indian marketplace browsing happens.

Backend Search Terms: The Hidden Keyword Layer

The backend search term field (found in the Keywords tab of your listing) holds up to 250 bytes of additional keywords that are invisible to buyers but indexed by Amazon's search engine. Use this space for: common misspellings of your product name, regional language transliterations, competitor brand names (note: actual competitor brand names are generally not allowed and violate policy — use category terms instead), and long-tail phrases that do not fit naturally in the title or bullets.

Do not repeat keywords already in your title or bullets — Amazon already indexes those. And do not use commas or quotation marks; just separate terms with spaces. Wasted bytes in this field are missed ranking opportunities.

A+ Content and What It Actually Does

A+ Content (formerly Enhanced Brand Content) is available to Brand Registry sellers and allows rich media — comparison tables, lifestyle images, brand story modules — to replace the plain text product description. A+ Content does not improve search ranking directly, but it consistently improves conversion rate. The logic is simple: more content, better presented, reduces uncertainty, and uncertainty is the main reason buyers go back to search.

A+ Content is most impactful for higher-priced items where the buyer is taking more financial risk and wants more information before committing. For a ₹200 product, a buyer might not read A+ at all. For a ₹3,000 product, it can be the deciding factor between conversion and bounce.

The Review Flywheel: How to Get Your First 15 Reviews

Amazon's ranking algorithm weights review count and average rating heavily, which creates a chicken-and-egg problem for new listings: without reviews, you do not rank; without ranking, you do not get sales; without sales, you do not get reviews. Breaking this loop requires intentional effort in the first 60 days.

Use Amazon's "Request a Review" button (available in Seller Central for each order) to automatically send buyers a review request after delivery. This is compliant with Amazon's policies. For friends and family purchases, ensure they are genuine transactions from real accounts — Amazon detects and removes incentivised reviews, and repeat violations lead to account suspension. Build your first 15 reviews the slow, legitimate way. They will outlast any shortcut.
